Tensegrity: The Integrative Body: A New View of Well-Being
Workshop Dates: July 7, 8 and 9, 2005 (2 to 4 PM)

This three-class workshop is an introduction to the movements and theories of Tensegrity and its application and health benefits in daily life.

Each class will focus on one of three time zones of the day; participants will learn some basic strategies to redeploy, or redistribute one's naturally abundant energy and Tensegrity movements and breaths:

  • For the morning, to help one start the day fresh and energized and to set one's intent;
  • For midday or afternoon, to rejuvenate and gain a sense of well-being after lunch and when sitting behind a desk;
  • For the evening, to practice sitting with legs extended, or lying down, to help one enter the night free of worries and ready for deep rest.

Tensegrity is the name given to the modern version of movements and positions of body and breath that were discovered by shamans of ancient Mexico and practiced for their profound effect on mental and physical well-being and awareness — movements taught to Dr. Carlos Castaneda, Florinda Donner-Grau, Taisha Abelar and Carol Tiggs, by their teacher, don Juan Matus, a Yaqui Indian shaman and heir to the knowledge of those ancient shamans.

The word "tensegrity," coined by architect Buckminster Fuller, is a combination of tensional integrity, referring to the forces at work in a structure formed by a finite network of compression, or rigid elements interconnected through tensile, or elastic elements, giving the structure an overall integrity, an ability to yield to shifts without breaking.

Carlos Castaneda found this process, Tensegrity, to be a perfect energetic description of the forces at work in both the movements and the way of being that his teacher taught him: tension here as the interplay of engagement and release that leads to the overall integrity of the body and the being, an integrity reflected in daily life as the ability to adapt to one's own energy, and to each other's energy in a way that contributes to the integrity of the community that we are.

Tensegrity has been the subject of four international videos, and classes have been taught for more than fifteen years throughout the world. In addition, there are ongoing practice groups that meet on a weekly basis in over 40 countries.
