acupuncture

At Tilo, we offer our patients traditional acupuncture treatments within the context of an integrated medical approach; meaning, we incorporate traditional acupuncture methods and protocols, with proven efficacy, to the sensitivities and necessities of each of our patients, and in conjunction with any current medical treatments that you might be going through. Our philosophy of approach is “first, consider and try natural treatments” since they enhance our already built in healing & repair mechanisms in our body, and because they carry the least adverse effects.

Acupuncture treatments include the use of adjunctive modalities proper to the art, such as Cupping, Tui-Na and Moxibustion

Dr Miles Reid provides something that is rare in the field: a dual degree as an M.D. (from Argentina) and as Chinese medical doctor, and, with this background, the knowledge that gives a sense of protection and safety to our patients.

What is acupuncture? How does it work? How does Western science explain it?
Today in most western cultures the ancient medical art of acupuncture is considered a "new alternative" medicine. In reality Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are practiced medical treatments that are over 5,000 years old. Very basically, Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles on the body's surface, in order to influence physiological functioning of the body.

In acupuncture, we want to allow flow; think yourself as a river, we are all made mostly of water in our bodies, if the river flow is stuck, nutrients cannot get where they need to go and waste products accumulate, unwanted. Acupuncture “un-stucks” the flow.

Acupuncture restores balance. You can relate it to temperature: how is it distributed? Is the abdomen hot? Are the knees cold? (here is a tip: warm them up before exercising!) The basis of Acupuncture is the theory that the body has an energy force running through it, a force known as Qi. Qi (also seen as chi or ki) is comprised of two parts, Yin and Yang. Yin and Yang are opposite forces, that when balanced, work together. Energy constantly flows up and down these pathways. When pathways become obstructed, deficient, excessive, or just unbalanced, Yin and Yang
are thrown out of balance. This causes illness. Acupuncture is said to restore the balance.

Another way to describe this is to say that yin and yang are two polar forces and Qi is the vital substance that expresses them.

The Qi consists of all essential life activities, which include the spiritual, emotional, mental and the physical aspects of life. A person's health is influenced by the flow of Qi in the body. Qi travels throughout the body along "Meridians" or special pathways. The acupuncture points are specific locations where the Meridians come to the surface of the skin, and are easily accessible by "needling."

From a scientific point of view, the main mechanisms of action seem to be the stimulation of neurotransmitters and neuro-hormones in the nervous system that affect the immune system and regulate the healing responses, and the release of pain-killing biochemicals such as endorphins. From its own perspective as a medical system TCM describes its effect as the result of restoring the balance of forces (yin-yang) in the body, which in turn result in beneficial physiological changes.

Acupuncture can also be used in conjunction with heat produced by burning specific herbs; this is called Moxibustion. In addition, a non-invasive method of acupressure therapy, called Tui-na, is also an effective component of the treatment.

Categories best covered by a combination of Acupuncture and Functional Medicine:

  • Fatigue
  • Intestinal symptoms: gas, bloating, constipation
  • Tension headaches
  • Anxiety
  • Low back pain
  • Menstrual disturbances of all types
  • Joint pains
  • Immune weaknesses
  • Insomnia

Some statistics if you are interested:

In the past two decades, acupuncture has grown in popularity in the United States. The report from a Consensus Development Conference on Acupuncture held at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1997 stated that acupuncture “is being widely practiced--by thousands of physicians, dentists, acupuncturists, and other practitioners--for relief or prevention of pain and for various other health conditions.” According to the 2002 National Health Interview Survey--the largest and most comprehensive survey of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use by American adults to date--an estimated 8.2 million U.S. adults had ever used acupuncture, and an estimated 2.1 million U.S. adults had used acupuncture in the previous year, spending as much as $500 million on acupuncture treatments.

In 1995, an estimated 10,000 nationally certified acupuncturists were practicing in the United States. Currently, there are over 15,000 licensed acupuncturists in practice throughout the country, with the greatest concentration of them in the state of California (almost 6,000) followed by Florida (1,200). Each of these practitioners goes through a rigorous three to four-year graduate training (depending on the state). Besides these fully trained TCM professionals, there is an equal or greater number of MD’s who also apply it in their practices (Medical Acupuncture) even though these are not trained in the other modalities of TCM. There are over 30 accredited schools in the US, currently with almost 5,000 students enrolled.

A 1997 panel on acupuncture by the NIH approved acupuncture for the treatment of post-operative and chemotherapy nausea and pain, as well as an adjunctive in headaches, menstrual disorders, osteoarthritis, lower back pain, asthma and stroke. Since then, the NIH to further test the efficacy of acupuncture has sponsored numerous studies. Outside the United States, the World Health Organization list more than 40 conditions for which acupuncture may be applicable. An example of this is a well-known study by Zang-Hee Cho of the University of California, Irvine, where he demonstrated, using fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) that inserting a needle in the acupuncture point GB35 (a point on the outside of the calf) and stimulating the point, caused a marked activation of the visual cortex.

chinese herbology

At our clinic, we have licensed herbalists with a Masters degree in Chinese herbology that evaluate and dispense natural herbal medicinals to our patients.

At Tilo, we dispense a wide variety of Chinese Medicine medicinals, both custom made formulas in granule form and ready-made formulas in the form of capsules, tablets, pills, liquids and plasters.

Custom-made formulas are prescribed individually to our patients, out of more than 200 single herbs (we use single herb granules from Sun Ten, a reputable company with FDA approval). Part of an office visit consists in the diagnosis and prescription of appropriate herbal medicinals to assist in the relief of symptoms and the promotion of healing and repair mechanisms in the body.

Ready-made formulas are a convenient way of dispensing Chinese herbs. We prescribe classic and modern formulas from the whole pharmacopeia, either from our clinic pharmacy or we order it to shipped out to our patients directly from the manufacturer. We only work with respected companies within the Acupuncture medical community and which have GMP (Good Manufacturing practices), such as Blue Poppy, Mayway, Evergreen, Kan and Brion herbs

Chinese herbs can be taken in conjunction with other forms of medication (Dr Reid helps patients assess potential interactions with other drugs) as a means to accelerate recovery from illness or injury. They are mostly plant based, cooked and then dehydrated into a powder, and are usually taken several times a day over a period of time. They have relatively very few side effects when compared with prescription medications, and their mechanism of action is often to regulate natural functions and stimulate homeostatic mechanisms (such as repair of tissue, immune response or control of inflammation)

Once you become a patient of our office, we will follow your progress and evaluate your Chinese Medicine prescription several times making any necessary adjustments. It is common to change formulas as your own clinical picture shifts and there are many variations of similar formulas that can address those shifts so that the treatment takes into account the actual current state of the body.

We invite you to schedule an appointment and find out how a chinese herbal formula can help you

nutritional counseling

As part of our office consultation & treatment sessions, we will assess aspects of your diet and how adjustments can help you heal faster and gain more energy and focus. Within the Chinese medical view, nutrients from diet are a key component of how the body functions. There are different foods that have specific affects on specific organs, and we will counsel you on what is best for your condition.

We take into account both the traditional understanding about food from Chinese medicine as well as current and cutting edge information on nutrition from a western biomedical perspective, including recommendations on a variety of researched nutritional supplements.

With the recent advances in the science of nutrition, and in the context of our modern life with all the demands and stresses, it is important to include in any nutritional counseling adequate advice on how to supplement what we get from our daily food intake. This has led to the emerging field of functional medicine, that is, the use of targeted nutrition to positively impact different organ functions. An adequate prescription of nutritional supplements can be both used as part of a regular diet aiming at enhancing health, vitality or longevity, and as a way to improve repair and recovery from injuries and illnesses, by means of providing a broad supply of the raw materials the body needs. We recommend
brands that have the highest and purest grade nutritionals available in the USA.

comprehensive medical evaluation

During your initial intake you will be evaluated from the unique perspective of integrating Chinese medicine and pertinent information of conventional biomedicine. Previous studies, treatments and lab work are welcome and will be taken into account. Further information, if needed, will be prescribed: laboratory testing and imaging are both within the scope of practice of a licensed acupuncturist; if needed, you will be counseled about seeing a specialist for more diagnosis. The main focus will be on nutrition, lifestyle and diagnosis of patterns according to Chinese medicine, as well as the treatment modalities. In addition, functional testing of organs and metabolic pathways might be recommended. This is a cutting edge area of science, increasingly available since the genome project was completed a few years ago, and where we can assess many aspects of our health and intervene through targeted nutrients to improve function.

Overall, a comprehensive evaluation takes into account integrating mind, body and spirit.

We are practitioners of mind, body & spirit medicine. Or you could say that we practice medicine of wellbeing. In mainstream US, the umbrella under which this new kind of medicine has emerged is called Integrative Medicine.

Integrative Medicine is a rapidly emerging field that seeks to improve medical care by combining the best of bio-medicine with mind-body-spirit approaches to health that have proven efficacy. In medicine, for example, the emergence of this new model of Integrative Medicine is one of the hottest topics nowadays in USA. Integrative medicine means enhancing the western medical model with complementary forms of care. The basic premise of integrative medicine is that the body is a whole and all its parts are connected.

It is the approach that people want; sensible, common-sense medicine. For example, what are the things that you expect from the healthcare provider when you go to see a doctor?

That they take time to talk to them and explain in a language that they can understand the nature of their problem
That they go over options of treatment with them
That they understand the influence and effects of diet on their health
That they understand the influence and effects of supplements and herbs on their health
That they are aware of mind-body interactions and energetic medicine

More and more, in clinical experience, we see social and emotional causes as the underlying cause of disease. The field of neuro-endocrine-immunology has made profound discoveries on the relationships between these components and the cells and tissues in the body.

In medical school we were taught an extensive intake questionnaire; but, as the demands of managed care puts pressures on the time doctors can actually spend with patients, entire sections of the questionnaire have to be tossed out, and the first one to go is the one about “social” life. Doctors have no time to inquire about important basic clues such as: What do you do to manage stress? What things make you happy? These answers often provide the best clues as to which way to individually approach patient care. A doctor of this new medicine will ask the patient: What do you tell yourself? What do you eat? How do you sleep at night? What do you do before going to sleep and upon waking up?

And for our patients, when you come to see us, we urge you: ask the questions, ask for options and information, and also, tell us how you feel, inside, not just the outside symptoms. A medicine of wellbeing is one where everything relates to everything: we have a body, we have thoughts and emotions and we also feel.

Here, at Tilo, we care.

the feldenkrais method®

The Feldenkrais Method has two different modes of instruction:

One hour group classes, called Awareness Through Movement, the Feldenkrais teacher verbally leads you through a sequence of movements in basic positions: sitting or lying on the floor, standing or sitting in a chair. It seeks to change the organization of your nervous system by engaging cognitive, sensorial and physical faculties. It is a series of movement explorations that takes a specific learning theme/movement pattern (i.e. flexion, extension, rolling, etc) and guides the student through a multiplicity of options for that movement pattern. This exploratory activity guides the process of learning and allows the student to discover by himself more functional ways to perform a particular motion. The student learns this new motion and can then replicate it in daily activities. This creates a more active and ongoing participation in the student’s healing process.

-Private Feldenkrais lessons, called Functional Integration, are tailored to each student's individual learning needs; you will be fully clothed usually lying on a table as your teacher guides your movements through touch. Functional Integration is a hands-on form of tactile, kinesthetic communication. The practitioner communicates how you organize your body and, through gentle touching and movement, conveys the experience of comfort, pleasure and ease of movement while you learn how to reorganize your body and behavior in new and more expanded functional motor patterns.

The Feldenkrais Method is an educational approach that focuses on expanding kinesthetic awareness as a basis for improving function. Through gentle movement and directed attention you can increase your ease and range of motion, improve your flexibility and coordination, and rediscover your innate capacity for graceful, efficient movement. These improvements will often naturally extend to enhance functioning in other aspects of your life as well. People learning the Feldenkrais Method are usually referred to as 'students' rather than clients or patients. This reinforces our view of the work as primarily being an educational process.

therapeutic massage

Here are some of the different bodywork modalities we offer:

Detox bodywork -- A full body therapy that combines Traditional Chinese Medicine Techniques with Lymphatic drainage massage that reduces fluid retention, enhances the removal of toxins from body tissues and supports the immune system. We use light, gentle touch to improve lymph circulation together with an exfoliation treatment to cleanse the body and Cupping, a type of therapy in which we create a suction in a cup to bring fresh blood to the area and enhance the body’s own healing capacity.

learn more about detox bodywork

Deep Tissue — a type of massage aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue. Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish massage, but the pressure will generally be more intense. It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or knots (also known as "adhesions.")

Sports Massage — a special form of massage that is typically used before, during, and after athletic events. The purpose of the massage is to prepare the athlete for peak performance, to drain away fatigue, to relieve swelling, to reduce muscle tension, to promote flexibility and to prevent injuries.

Reflexology — the physical act of applying pressure to the feet , hand and ears with specific thumb, finger and hand techniques without the use of oil or lotion. It is based on a system of zones and reflex areas that reflect an image of the body on the feet, hands and ears with a premise that such work effects a physical change to the body.

Lymphatic Drainage — Lymphatic drainage therapy consists of a manual massage that focuses on restoring the natural flow of the lymphatic system, which promotes health as well in other bodily systems such as the circulatory, respiratory, muscular and endocrine system. Highly recommended before and post-plastic surgery!

Trigger Point Therapy — Trigger points are accumulations of waste products around a nerve receptor. Trigger points form in muscles which have been overused or injured due to an accident or surgery. Increased muscle tension is the primary side-effect of trigger points and pain is the most common secondary effect. In Trigger Point massage therapist and client work together as a team to maximize the effectiveness of the treatment.

Do you want to quit smoking?

acupuncture
in conjunction with
hypnotherapy
maximizes your
success !!!

We offer a combination protocol to our patients and friends, of these two complimentary approaches to smoking cessation.

The protocol consists of an initial hypnotherapy session to usher the decision to quit smoking, followed by a cycle of acupuncture treatments to sustain the decision and help the body detoxify.

* 98% of clients stop smoking after the first session.
* This protocol has been used successfully with thousands of people across the United States and Europe

About the acupuncture:
The acupuncture treatments span a period of four weeks and focus primarily on points in the ear that are left for 30 minutes while you comfortably relax on a bed. The first two weeks treatments are three times each week to support your body through the transition process, followed by two more weekly meetings. We will recommend you supplements and herbs that reduce the cravings and support the detoxification process, which you will take daily between the treatments.

About the hypnotherapy:
The smoking cessation treatment consists of one five-hour session. The first four hours are spent re-educating you about smoking. The last 40 minutes are dedicated to the hypnotherapy session. A tape is made of the session and given to you. You will listen to the tape every night until I see you again for the free follow-up.
The follow-up is scheduled for about a week from the initial session. This second session is one and a half hours and is provided at no additional charge. A tape is made of the second session and you listen to that tape for two weeks.

pain management

do you suffer from pain?
acupuncture can help!

Perhaps one of the most proven and common effects of acupuncture is the relief of pain, both muscle-squeletal and from internal organs. There are numerous point combinations specifically addressing a wide variety of pain syndromes. Here are the most common:

- Injuries of any kind, both chronic and acute
- Pain from tendons, muscles or ligaments
- Tensional and migraine headaches
- Back pain and Sciatica
- Stomach pain from ulcers or gastritis
- Abdominal pain from a variety of causes
- PMS cramping
- Pain caused by inflammation or autoimmune conditions
- Sore throat or sinus pain

For the experience of pain to occur, there are two components at play: information from receptors at the pain site sending a message to the central nervous system (CNS) and the processing in the brain of it and of all other information that results in the experience of pain, including memories, emotions and other sensorial input. One of the chief mechanisms by which acupuncture works is by modulating the processing message of pain in the CNS, down regulating the end result and lessening the experience of pain. The other mechanism is by stimulating both repair of injured tissues and by diminishing inflammatory responses that in themselves might be causing or worsening the pain.

From a research point of view, the main mechanisms of action seem to be the stimulation of neurotransmitters and neuro-hormones in the nervous system that affect the immune system and regulate the healing responses, and the release of pain-killing biochemicals such as endorphins. From its own perspective as a medical system TCM describes its effect as the result of restoring the balance of forces (yin-yang) in the body, which in turn result in beneficial physiological changes.

During your treatment, be sure to tell us about any pain you might be suffering, and all its details. Acupuncture can work in conjunction with appropriate herbal formulas (both internal and topical such as in the form of plasters or liquids) to maximize results.

tensegrity

Here is an excerpt from a panel called East Meets West: A Discussion of Preventive Medicine at the Ideas Festival in Aspen, in 2005, which gives an overview of what Tensegrity is:

Dr. Reid, and Ms. Alexander, you are also practitioners and instructors of a discipline called Tensegrity. What is Tensegrity, and how does it relate to or inform your understanding of integrative health care?

Tensegrity is the modern name given to the magical passes—movements and positions of body and breath that were discovered by men and women shamans who lived in Mexico prior to the conquest, and practiced for their profound effect on one’s mental and physical well-being and awareness. (The discipline of Tensegrity: the modern version of the magical passes, and a way of being that promotes the best use of one’s energy). The movements elicit a “reorganization” of one’s own natural energy in a way that promotes wellbeing and youth.

The word Tensegrity was coined by Buckminster Fuller, architect and scientist, well known here in Aspen and in all US, who described it as a combination of tensional integrity, referring to the forces at work in a structure that is formed by a finite network of compression, or rigid elements interconnected through tensile, or elastic elements, giving the structure an overall integrity. For example, in the human body, the compressive forces are the bones, and the tendons, muscles and ligaments that attach to them compose the tensile network. Due to this elastic
property of interconnection, when one element of a tensegrity structure is shifted, this impact is spread throughout the whole structure, (like in a ripple effect) and all the other elements shift as well, or adapt for a new configuration, yielding to these shifts without breaking.

Carlos Castaneda found this process, tensegrity, to be a perfect energetic description of the modern practice of the magical passes and of the way of being that don Juan Matus (his teacher) taught him. In the case of the magical passes, Tensegrity refers to the interplay of tensing and relaxing the tendons and muscles, and their energetic counterparts, in a way that contributes to the overall integrity of the body as a physical and an energetic unit.

In regard to its influence in understanding health, Tensegrity is about learning how `to regard the body as a community. One could describe the body as composed of a number of single nations, the nation of the lung, the nation of the heart, the nation of the stomach, and so on. In the same way that Integrative Medicine aims to integrate different modalities of treatment in healthcare, Tensegrity teaches you how to be aware of the interrelationships between the different parts of our body, and their effect on the mind and the spirit, the whole being. For example, certain
subtle movements that bring flexibility to the feet and ankles can also release the diaphragm and open the breathing rhythm, which in term affects one’s thoughts and emotions and the way one relates to others.

Our western culture emphasizes “outside”; Tensegrity, (as Eastern culture does) for instance, emphasizes “inside.” Our eyes put our focus on the outside, but then no one knows what we feel inside. We do all these things to live up to what we see others do and we think we need to match. Tensegrity is a way of life where you really listen to your body and this has a very practical application in the health clinic, because it is in line with the premise of empowering the patient to be an active participant of his/her own healing.

Rather than as a separate treatment session, concepts, premises and kinesthetic aspects of Tensegrity are given by Dr. Miles Reid and by Aerin Alexander within their respective other treatment modalities.
